Interdisciplinary unit studies teach traditional subject areas within a meaningful context. They begin with a theme at the center of the unit. The theme can be any interest that the child has, a specific book or time period, or a central question. The different subjects that need to be covered are pictured as satellites around the basic theme. In other words, starting with the theme of baseball, the interdisciplinary teacher needs to figure out how to make history, mathematics, science, art, and reading relate to baseball. Suddenly math serves a purpose, as it helps the student to better understand the game.
Interdisciplinary studies tend to include a field trip and some kind of student project, related to the central theme. The theme is what ties all the disciplines together.

Rivka will create a Personalized Interdisciplinary Unit Study based on your child's interests and geared towards their educational level. A unit study can also be designed to include children of different ages or skill levels. Unit studies can last from a month to a year. The student can become an expert in a particular interest without parents worrying that other skills are being sacrificed to an all consuming passion.
|
Unit studies can easily go beyond what is initially planned. A book that is read as part of a unit study is likely to lead a child to another interest. This can lead to a whole new unit study if desired. Either way, this is real learning in action. Learning should always lead to new interests or to the desire to expand knowledge of a current interest.
